Mounted police charged fans at a Scottish football pitch yesterday as trouble flared. Three people were arrested at the match between Cumnock Juniors and Auchinleck Talbot at Townhead Park in Cumnock, East Ayrshire. Some 2000 were in attendance.

Fury As Tory Msp Asks: Was Rape Victim a Prostitute?

ALEADING Scottish Conservative MSP is under attack for suggesting the latest victim of rape in Glasgow may have been a prostitute. Bill Aitken, shadow minister for community safety, apologised to the woman after making the comments in an interview with the Sunday Herald. Aitken has been a District Court Judge, Justice of the Peace and is a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Glasgow. He is also convenor of the Scottish Parliament's justice committee - which helps formulates rape laws.

Printing Firm Faces Questions About Work for Labour Mps

A printing firm that provided Jim Devine with invoices for jobs never carried out is facing questions about its work for other Labour MPs. John Wilson, an SNP MSP for Central Scotland, has called for an investigation into the links between Armstrong Printing Ltd and Scottish Labour. Witnesses linked to the Alloa-based firm, which lists Labour councillor Margaret Brisley as a director, were part of the prosecution's case against Devine.

2005: Devine succeeds Robin Cook as MP for Livingston in a by- election May 24, 2009: We reveal Devine received pound(s)2157 for electrical work on his London flat, carried out by "Eastern Electrical Ltd". The firm's invoice bears a bogus address, sham postcode and false VAT number.

Does Even Camilla Care If She's Queen?

WHEN you get two possible future queens lunching together conspicuously at a London restaurant, as Camilla and Kate did last week, you can't help thinking that, given they could have done this chat in the drawing room back home, this is a statement lunch, and these ladies and the institution they belong to have something to be gained by saying "look at me, down with my royal home girls". There was Kate, foolishly ordering a starter that provoked the wrath of animal rights activists. And there...

Consultation On 'Devolving' Coastguard

THE Scottish Government is asking key maritime agencies whether coastguard services should be devolved to Holyrood from Westminster. Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead has written to port boards, ferry companies, coastal councils, fishing groups and the Royal National Lifeboat Association.

Why Are Scots Filmmakers Seduced by the Grim Side?

HIS films Wanted and Kick-Ass electrified cinema audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Now Mark Millar, one of Scotland's top film talents, has issued an impassioned plea to directors and investors. Millar, the ambassador for this week's Glasgow Film Festival, wants to see Scottish movie-makers making commercial films with the potential to reach an international audience.

Government Ignores Its Experts Over Tugs

The UK Government is risking environmental disasters by scrapping emergency tugs in breach of its own expert advice, the Sunday Herald can reveal. A leaked report prepared for the Government's Maritime and Coastguard Agency warns that four tugs - two based in Scotland - are needed to prevent "catastrophic" spillages of oil, toxic chemicals or radioactive waste from accidents at sea.

Facebook: How Police Officers Give Game Away

THEY are the not very secret policemen - the officers who just can't help gossiping about themselves online. Police officers, especially rookies, are making themselves seriously vulnerable to organised crime groups by blurting out personal details on Facebook. There are even suspicions that some senior officers think it might be a good idea to ban officers from social networking sites.

Like the Romans, We're Eating Our Way to the Grave

THERE was a debate on the Radio 4 Today programme last week about how our obsession with food has engendered a kind of gluttony which will be the downfall of civilisation as we know it. I could sympathise with this argument from the moral high ground. My breakfast that day had consisted of an apple, a tangerine and a carrot. The day before, my breakfast was a triple-decker square sausage, tattie scone and fried egg (on ciabatta, it has to be said), which would have left me on the lower slopes...

It's My Body and I'll Work Out If I Want To

Two women found themselves making headlines for opposing reasons last week: one got bigger, the other smaller. First up was Paris Hilton, who drew gasps of surprise as she strode down the catwalk at Sao Paulo Fashion Week sporting a new, muscly, bulked-up look. The party-loving socialite, whose slender, bikini-clad figure has graced many a magazine cover, has reportedly been hitting the gym to help sculpt a more rippled body. Almost immediately some social commentators began mourning the loss...

''It's so Important to Realise the Incredible Financial Pressures''

Kirsteen Redpath, 35, from Govanhill, Glasgow, is studying Slavonic studies and comparative literature at Glasgow University - her courses are now under threat. "I think everybody is entitled to education of a high standard," she says. "Slavonic studies - Polish, Czech and Russian - could be axed, we don't know when yet. I'm going into third year ... well, I would be.

The Choice Is Simple: Elite Universities or Free Classes for Students. It's Time for Scotland to Make Up Its Mind

The University of Glasgow wears its egalitarian tradition proudly. The idea that higher education should be open to all, regardless of background, is etched into its fabric. The Hetherington Building and the Sir Henry Jones Memorial Prize, awarded annually to the university's top moral philosopher, bear the names of men who first pronounced that university education is not just for the gilded few, but for everyone with the brains to get there. This proud past collided with its ambitious futur...

Fair Reward for a Banker? An Asbo

WE like to go easy on the expletives in this newspaper. Overuse can deaden the effect of some otherwise handy and appropriate words. I'm not fond, either, of comparing human beings to pigs. The pig, unlike some people I could mention, is a noble and intelligent mammal. So what is there left to say about bankers, their bonuses, and their indestructible sense of entitlement? What's a banker worth? What's the price of a waste of space?

Thousands of Police in Riot Gear Blocked Off the Centre... [Derived Headline]

THOUSANDS of police in riot gear blocked off the centre of Algeria's capital yesterday and stopped government opponents from staging a protest march that sought to emulate Egypt's popular revolt. Small groups of demonstrators gathered in May 1 Square in the city centre shouting "Bouteflika out!", a reference to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. They waved newspaper front pages declaring Friday's overthrow of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak.

Inspired by Egyptian protests that toppled the president, thousands of Yemeni demonstrators called for revolution yesterday and clashed with government supporters in the streets of Sanaa. The scuffles broke out hours after men armed with knives and sticks forced around 300 anti-government protesters to quit a demonstration in the Yemeni capital.
