AT the 1985 Royal Highland Show, I could name almost every breed of cattle on display: the Charolais, the Friesian, the Holstein. I was 14 years old, had grown up on a farm just south of Berwick-upon- Tweed, and the show was one of the highlights of my family's year: a grand day out that was marked mainly by my grandfather's attempts to get as many free meals as possible (his record was seven) and my father's astounding talent for making long-winded conversation with the sellers of unaffordable tractors.

The next year, financial difficulties not spoken about within the family meant we left the farm and moved to a nearby village.
