After months of skirmishes and bloodletting, the battle for Scotland's historic infantry regiments reaches its height tomorrow when the Council of Colonels meets in Edinburgh to decide the future of the six regiments which currently make up the Scottish Division.

Having taken soundings from past and serving soldiers, the colonels will recommend to the Executive Committee of the Army Board (ECAB) that one big Scottish regiment or divisional grouping be formed. To be known as The Royal Scottish Regiment, it will consist of five service battalions and two Territorial Army battalions, and will operate out of barracks in Edinburgh, Northern Ireland, Lancashire and Fallingbostel in Germany. There is no room for manoeuvre: a source close to the council admitted that the colonels have to make up their mind tomorrow, "otherwise the army will do it for them".
