THE Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, insists the use of the Official Secrets Act to gag all media comment on an alleged memo said to show Tony Blair talking George Bush out of attacking the Arab television station Al-Jazeera is not to "save the embarrassment of a politician".

He maintains his warning was, in fact, a nod to Britain's media to seek legal advice, and that he was acting in his independent role to protect the administration of justice. We don't buy this - and neither does the head of Al-Jazeera, Wadah Khanfar, who wants Tony Blair to tell him precisely what the memo contained and if he did persuade Bush not to bomb his station's headquarters.
