THE music industry isn't known for its tolerance of late- flowering talent, but it's making an exception for Joan Wasser. The Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist spent more than a decade in various east coast bands, worked as a session musician, playing violin for Lou Reed and Elton John, and formed close working relationships with Rufus Wainwright and Anthony And The Johnsons, even appearing on the latter's 2005 Mercury Prize winning album I Am A Bird Now.
But it was only in 2006, at the age of 36, that she really emerged from the shadows. Fronting her own trio, the quirkily named Joan As Police Woman, she released a debut album of smouldering torch songs called Real Life. It won her instant acclaim.See the full content of this document
