ALEX Arthur could claim to have moved to the centre stage of Scottish boxing last night, making a smooth debut appearance live on ITV1 to retain his European super-featherweight title at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.

What was made to look like an effortless five-round victory over the previously unbeaten Spaniard, Sergio Palomo, maintained Arthur's career trajectory towards a probable world title fight next year. Promoter Frank Warren suggested such a contest might take place at "Glasgow Castle", before swiftly correcting himself and putting forward Edinburgh Castle as a potential venue. That would presumably require his home city to come out in greater numbers than they have during a sequence of poor recent attendances which prompted him to move west last night.
