I LOVE radio because you can learn stuff without having to look up from buttering your piece. Last Tuesday lunchtime, I learned that Shaun Of The Dead actor Simon Pegg asked to say the words "square sausage" in a scene in the new Star Trek fi lm "because it's a Scottish delicacy" and because he thought it would be funny. He's right, it would have been. Sadly the scene was cut from the fi nished version, though I'm hopeful it'll make the extras section on the DVD.

Pegg, by the way, plays Scotty in JJ Abrams's Hollywood remake. Scotty, of course, is Linlithgow's most famous son after Alex Salmond, the fi rst minister.
