A MAGNIFICENT late recovery by rookies David Howell and Paul Casey salvaged what could have been a disastrous morning for Europe in yesterday morning's four-ball. Each sank a put on the last two holes to come from behind and give Europe relief from a possible 4- 0 whitewash.

A salvaged half by Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood gave their side a manageable 21/2-11/2 reverse, a better American side than this would not have surrendered a position which could've eaten heavily into Europe's five-point lead.
