A private pub joke about two gay cowboys running the country was laughed off by the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg yesterday, who said the "Brokeback Coalition" jibe by the Tory right-winger David Davis was "no threat" to his partnership with David Cameron.

A journalist from the Financial Times overheard Davis repeating the "Brokeback" description he had heard from the former Tory chairman, Lord Ashcroft to businessmen in the Boot & Flogger pub in London.
