BARELY 14 months have passed since Gordon Bulloch stepped on to the pitch at Auckland's Eden Park to become Scotland's sole Test representative on the 2005 British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand. His arrival provoked an ironic chorus of Flower of Scotland in the stadium's press box, but it also confirmed his status as one of the foremost hookers in international rugby.

In which light, you might now expect the 31-year-old Bulloch to be plying his lucrative trade in one of the competitive cauldrons of the world game: the Guinness Premiership, France's Top 14 or even the New Zealand NPC. Somehow, the Third Division of the SRU's Premier League - an environment that includes such outfits as Cambuslang, Kirkcaldy and Perthshire - does not quite fit that bill.
