Bull in a china shop Habits die hard for business editors as one Scottish businessman found to his cost last week. The Observer's former city editor Paul Farrelly launched a stinging attack on Hamish Grossart, the nephew of Sir Angus, over his performance as chairman of china group Royal Doulton.

Farrelly, now Labour MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, urged shareholders at the annual meeting to vote against Grossart's re- election to the board, claiming the Scot had presided over a major slump in the 200-year-old business. "Since you became chair, Royal Doulton has racked up (pounds) 127 million of pre-tax losses, has never made a profit, has never paid a dividend and has seen turnover halve," said Farrelly.
