Calls for tough new measures to protect vulnerable people from the worst excesses of Britain's credit explosion at a debt conference in Edinburgh last week coincided with the news that a father who ran up (pounds) 70,000 in debts on 19 credit cards had killed himself.

The tragic suicide of Stephen Lewis, who concealed the extent of his debts from his wife and could not cope with the dreadful secret, has highlighted the ease with which credit is available, and the speed at which it spirals out of control.
