ON balance, last Sunday may not have been the best of times to start reading How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered The World, Francis Wheen's hilarious critique of the intellectual vacuousness of modern culture. For on the one day when any sane mind should have been protected from thoughts of Matt Williams, Wheen's diatribes against "the proliferation of obscurantist bunkum" and "the tyranny of twaddle" exerted a curious power in ensuring that such thoughts simply would not go away.

Yet perhaps Wheen should not be blamed too severely, for the truth of the matter is that Williams' own display the previous day, in the aftermath of Scotland's 43-22 loss to England at Twickenham, had been so staggeringly brazen that he was bound to be a persistent presence, and a powerful irritant, even without any prodding from the author's metaphorical elbow.
