IF it's good enough for princes Harry and William, the gap year is good enough for any young Scot, according to a new plan being set out this week by First Minister Jack McConnell.

The scheme is more likely to see young Scots taking a year out for sports coaching with disabled children and conservation work in Scotland's new national parks. This contrasts with herding cows on horseback at an Outback cattle station or working with HIV positive orphans in Africa - as the second in line to the throne has been doing recently - or, indeed, motorcycling round the world as actor Ewan McGregor is doing with a friend and a film crew.
