PRESIDENT Bashar al-Assad's decision to remove some of Syria's armed forces from Lebanon was only to be expected. However the decision to withdraw will not satisfy everyone.

The announcement will appeal to the Lebanese who have been demonstrating following last week's resignation of their Syrian- backed government but that is only for domestic consumption. The other main players, the US and Israel, will not be so charmed. President George W Bush has already demanded a complete withdrawal of all Syrian influence from Lebanon, claiming that Syria is a sponsor of state terrorism. At the same time, Israel continues to blame the Syrians for supporting the Palestinian terrorists who blew up a nightclub in Tel Aviv last month. Both countries have every reason to want the demise of Assad's regime.
