There was speculation within the newspaper that events had taken a nasty turn and McGurk was told to leave immediately after he gave an interview to the Sunday Herald last week in which he refused to dismiss suggestions he had quit because he was frustrated with Johnston's cost cutting and tighter rules on editorial expenses.
