FOR Everton fans who bestowed the status of cult hero on him, it was a fitting end, Duncan Ferguson scoring in the dying seconds of the last game of the season at Goodison and then being sent on his way with a standing ovation which brought the big man to tears.

At 34, he was released by his club last week. He is a free agent, but one restricted by a battered body which has proved unable to withstand the rigours of top-flight football in recent seasons.
