IF a tendency to be instinctively pessimistic is one of the defining characteristics of the average Scotland supporter, then David Taylor's credentials have not been diminished by seven years in charge of the SFA.

Taylor was boarding a flight home the day after attending the Uefa Cup final while Scotland were simultaneously playing Bulgaria in the Kirin Cup in Japan. A fellow passenger a couple of rows in front leaned over to pass on the good news that Scotland had gone 1- 0 ahead, but then all mobiles were switched off and there were no updates until the plane landed and the same passenger learned the final score.
