IT is the most popular diet around, with Natalie Imbruglia and Hillary Clinton reported to be among its celebrity fans - but a new study has found the GI diet might not help people to lose weight or improve their health.

Hot on the heels of the Atkins diet, the Glycemic Index (GI) regime was hailed as a more sensible and healthy eating plan for weight loss. It distinguishes between "good" and "bad" carbohydrates and is said to have boosted sales of foods such as porridge, oatcakes and nuts.
