THE number of vulnerable children being placed in adult psychiatric wards has increased to record levels in Scotland, 12 months after doctors branded the situation "shocking" and a matter of "grave concern".

A Sunday Herald investigation has found that at least 144 under- 18s were admitted to adult units last year, with some witnessing or facing "verbal aggression, violence and inappropriate sexual behaviour". A record 28 under-16s were also placed in adult wards.
