SHAKESPEARE is the unhappy subject of quarrels (to steal a line from Act 5, Scene I of The Merchant Of Venice) among educationalists in deepest England. Traditionalists fear that a set of textbooks doth dumb down excessively the works of their bard.

They may have a point, considering the length the books go to make Shakespeare's prose more accessible to today's literacy- challenged pupils.
