'It announces itself with a whimper" is one of the nicer things the critic Jonathan Meades had to say about the architecture erected in Aberdeen by oil companies over the years. The accusation is unlikely to be levelled at the stadium being mooted by the city's football club, however.

"Iconic", "a gateway to the city" and "a statement of intent" are just some of the ways Aberdeen's recently-appointed chief executive Duncan Fraser describes a project that for many years has seemed to supporters something of a pipe dream. After a move to a site at Kingswells in the west of the city was rejected some five years ago, a lengthy consultation process culminated last month in the submission of detailed plans for a new ground at Loirston Loch, just off the A90 on the approach to Aberdeen from the south.
