IN what is turning out to be a vintage year for golf's Major championships, a pleasing leaderboard will greet the large crowds who descend on Royal Troon for the denouement of the 133rd Open Championship.

A day in which a Frenchman threatened to clamp one hand around the Claret Jug ended with a profound sense of deja vu for those who had witnessed the Masters at Augusta National and last month's US Open at Shinnecock Hills. Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els are again in the shake-up, as is Retief Goosen, who beat both of them on Long Island. The only difference this time is that Tiger Woods is very much in contention also.
