Summary
THESE are heady times in Frinton, the Essex seaside settlement (pop 5500) that could traditionally have been described as more comatose than sleepy. The past few years have brought a raging controversy over the modernisation of the town's level-crossing gates, the opening of its first fish-and-chip shop, the extension to the opening hours of its one and only pub, and - perhaps not inconsequentially - the building of lavish new public toilets.
And as modern life has swept through Frinton, the pace of change has been truly breakneck at its local golf club. In 2002, a mere 107 years after its founding, the club struck a resounding blow for equality on and off the course when its members voted to admit women into the bar for the first time and to let them tee off before 10am on Saturdays, privileges that had long been exclusively male preserves.
