IT has been said that the optimism of sports fans knows no bounds, but followers of Edinburgh and Glasgow have had their spirits tested to the limit over a season in which the two teams appear to have been hurtling backwards at a rate of knots.

The Magners League campaigns of both sides came to a predictably shabby ending on Friday evening with two away defeats, Edinburgh losing 31-6 to Treviso and Glasgow going down 38-3 to Leinster. Reports suggest that a few supporters accompanied the Scottish teams on their travels, but their journeys must surely have been undertaken in hope of decent weekends in Venice and Dublin rather than expectation of victories on the road.
