Mothers and their children come from far and wide to see him at the circus, gasping as he notches another incredible day on to his tally of non-eating. As the years pass, the job begins to go out of fashion. The circus master - a reasonable man - doesn't want to fire the artist. Instead, he moves him away from the main attractions, first to the fringes of the main tent, and then to the outskirts of the circus camp. Regardless, the old man maintains his fast, well past his previous record, and is eaten by the hunger that defines him.
