IT'S fair to say that Marks & Spencer has built the very fabric of its reputation on the firm foundations of its pants. Since 1884, when St Michael toiled over his first range of bloomers, the high street giant knew there was nicker in knickers. And so it was that Markies became the very face of the dependable undie, the embodiment of the comfy cotton gusset.
But what is going on? Have soaring profits gone to their head? What is this "invisible knicker" the headlines are screaming about? Are we all to start going commando? Before I'd got them in a proper twist, the knickers revealed themselves: M&S have launched a "No VPL" line. For the uninitiated and unelasticated, VPL does not stand for Very Painful Lace or even Varicosed Purple Legs.
