IN one sense, it came as no great surprise when the news broke last week of Israel's assassination of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Israel has never left the world in any doubt of its intention to target militant Palestinian leaders, especially when they head up organisations like Hamas. But like most Middle East observers, my first thoughts were of the potential retaliation for such an action. This after all, was really upping the stakes in the riskiest way possible. That said, Ariel Sharon has always played it to the very brink when dealing with his Arab foes.
Perhaps the greatest danger now is the ever-diminishing chance for voices of reason and moderation to be heard above the clamour of rockets and suicide bombs. As one colleague noted last week, hasn't Sharon, for whatever reason, inadvertently strengthened the extremists and empowered not the makers of peace but the bringers of war? Robert Tait leads off our three-page special coverage this weekend with his report from Gaza, while Trevor Royle and Yasir Suleiman examine events from both an Israeli and an Arab perspective.See the full content of this document
