IN the teeming frontier town of Peshawar yesterday, Pakistani security services arrested a senior Afghan Taliban official. Ustad Yasar, who headed a Taliban information wing, had been released from prison in Afghanistan in 2007 in exchange for a kidnapped Italian journalist.
According to the Pakistani authorities, Yasar had been detained because he was actively engaged in militant activities and had been sent to Peshawar by Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, to mediate in a dispute within the movement's ranks. Yasar's presence in the border town is again proof - if any were needed - that the Taliban are deeply entrenched in the buffer area between the two countries.See the full content of this document
