YOU could call it the Tom Jones curve, that curious graph of popular appeal that takes a performer from almost universal derision through grudging acceptance to something close to widespread popularity. They're the height of naff when they start out, and the epitome of cool when they finally receive that long-cherished invitation to headline at Glastonbury. Weird, but it happens all the time. Just ask Tom.

Or, for that matter, just ask anyone who has kept a close eye on the fortunes of Land Rover's Freelander model over the past few years. Launched in 1997, the Freelander was immediately an object of scorn among those who believed that the most venerable of all off- road manufacturers had committed an act of heresy by producing a vehicle that was both comfortable and reliable enough to cover 50 miles without a major engine rebuild.
