NEW York, in all its bustling wonder, has been the centre of many of music's thrusting revolutions over the decades, but look across the Hudson, and you'll find the New Jersey town of Hoboken. Since 1984, Hoboken has been home to one of American music's best-kept secrets, a band whose expansive worldview and sense of playful experimentation has endeared them to a fanbase who approach them with hushed awe. That band is Yo La Tengo.

Formed when husband and wife duo Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley started tinkering in the studio, the band added a third member, James McNew, in 1992, and since then, have produced a series of stellar, beautiful albums, each stretching their aesthetic a little further. The latest of these is the brilliantly titled I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass. It is, needless to say, not afraid of you. And it will beat your ass. It takes in ten-minute guitar drone epics, sweetly infectious punk, a chamber orchestra, and a healthy dose of fresh, bright-eyed enthusiasm one of Yo La Tengo's specialities.
