THIS summer I have three books put aside in anticipation of arriving in Arran and having the time to enjoy them properly. The first is a recent birthday present. Marina Lewycka's A Short History Of Tractors In Ukrainian (Penguin, pounds-7.99) is, I am informed, not what it says on the cover and is recommended as great light entertainment.

The second book was also given to me, this time by the author himself. Alexander McCall Smith has a tremendous passion for Africa and his book of folk tales The Girl Who Married A Lion (Canongate, pounds-6.99) is helping to raise money for Malawi - a cause close to my heart. Sandy gave me the book a few months ago and I have been saving it for the summer.

And finally, my daughter has recommended The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Bloomsbury, pounds-7.99). She says it is a moving story which will touch my heart, so I'm sure it will keep me occupied on the odd rainy day.
