AT least one person watching the media circus surrounding Gary Glitter's chaotic return to London could take some satisfaction from the furore. For Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, the events demonstrated that the UK has some of the toughest prevention measures in place for paedophiles.

Glitter's lawyer David Corker, who represented the disgraced TV star Michael Barrymore after Stuart Lubbock's body was found in his swimming pool seven years ago, claimed the former pop star was not guilty of the abuse of two young girls which had him jailed in Vietnam and that he had been unfairly tried there.
