KNOWN as the "Pasdaran" or "army of guardians", Iran's Revolutionary Guards were created to defend the 1979 Islamic revolt from both foreign and domestic enemies.

But while the revolution's Islamic spiritual leader Ayatollah Khomeini prohibited the Guards from becoming actively involved in politics, over the years domestic and regional political crises have gradually enabled the Guards' commanders to break Khomeini's taboo on political activity.
