WITH good reason, Richard Holmes is considered to be one of our finest narrative historians. He brings to the task an uncomplicated and engaging prose style, he has the ability to communicate difficult ideas in a straightforward way and as a television presenter he has reached a wide audience that warms to his obvious enthusiasm for the military life. Not that he is an unthinking cheerleader: his studies on the evolution of the British Army are beyond criticism and in Firing Line, Holmes had written one of the best studies of the soldier's reaction to the shock of battle.
