MARTIN O'NEILL was encouraged to break with tradition and go upfirst to lift the Tennent's Scottish Cup at Hampden yesterday. Now it is up to Gordon Strachan to lift Celtic.

A 1-0 victory secured by an Alan Thompson strike which deflected off teenager Garry Kenneth's heel gave Celtic the cup for a record 33rd time but none of those previous triumphs were secured amid such a swirl of contrasting emotions. In expressing their thanks and gratitude to O'Neill at the end of his last match in charge, the Celtic supporters gave the cup final a broader significance than the mere accumulation of another piece of silverware.
