Hendry's Pupil Comes of Age Stephen Maguire Is Desperate for Revenge When He Meets His Master in Their First Competitive Match, Finds Stewart Fisher

Summary

SCOTTISH snooker followers will spend this Christmas time preparing for a genuine feast ofStephens. Ever since he was 15, Stephen Maguire has travelled from Glasgow to Stirling five times a week to practise with his idol and now 110Sport stablemate Stephen Hendry. At first he would return home after their marathon five- hour sessions demoralised and without so much as a single frame to his name, but latterly the now 23-year-old Maguire has cut the workouts down to just once or twice a week, as his own mark on the sport becomes ever more indelible.

The latest addition to his burgeoning CV was his rout of David Gray this week to clinch the UK Championship title, which granted him the kudos of winning the second biggest event on the circuit, not to mention Pounds70,000 in prize money. But still the pair of training partners have never met in a competitive match. Until now, that is. Assuming Maguire can beat Stuart Bingham in the first round (the Glaswegian, after all, is still outside the world's top 16), the two will square up in the sport's next televised event, the Welsh Open, in January.
