May 18, 1920 Karol Jozef Wojtyla born in Wadowice, Poland, second son of retired army sergeant and a mother of Lithuanian origin. The family are strict Catholics but did not share the anti-Semetic views of many of their neighbours. As a child he was a keen athlete, enjoying hiking, swimming, kayaking and skiing.

1938 Wojtyla began studying philosophy and literature at the Jagellonian University in Krakow, which the Nazis closed down when they invaded in 1939.

His Life and Times

To escape death or deportation, Wojtyla worked in a quarry as a stone cutter and later took an office job.

1941 His father, the last member of his immediate family, died. He later said that his father had told him: "I will not live long and would like to be certain before I die that you will comit yourself to God's service."
