The route crosses over the Duke's Pass, the scene of intense combat in 1651 when Oliver Cromwell's lieutenant in Scotland, General Monk, tried to subdue Royalist forces. Trouble flared two years later again when the Earl of Glencairn and Graham of Duchray ambushed Monk's men, this time routing the Cromwellian force.
