AL-QAEDA militants killed at least 16 people, including a Briton and an American, and seized 50 foreigners as hostages yesterday in an attack on the world's biggest oil exporter.

Saudi security forces stormed the luxury Oasis housing complex in Khobar, used by Western petrol companies to house their staff, and shots could be heard ringing out as fighting raged between the militants and Saudi forces. Those being held last night included American, Italian and Dutch citizens.
