YOU really know spring has arrived when the bees are buzzing around your garden looking for pollen and nectar. But fears are growing that the humble honey bee is under threat after reports of a mysterious illness killing up to 75-per cent of beekeepers' colonies.

A number of beekeepers in England and Wales have found their hives empty as they prepare for the spring and have reported the cases to the National Bee Unit, which helps protect the insect from threats of disease and environmental damage.

John Chapple, chairman of the London Beekeepers Association, revealed last week that he has lost more than 20 of his 40 hives in west London. He also said the Ruislip Beekeepers' Association had lost 75-per cent of their hives. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is now planning to investigate the reasons behind the deaths.
