AS Labour's justice spokesman, Richard Baker is forever fretting about Scotland's gruesome relationship with The Drink. Just how effective a campaigner he is can be judged from the fact even his Holyrood assistant ignores him. On Wednesday, Gordon Aikman, Baker's "research and communications officer", e-mailed his fellow Labour drudges at Holyrood about "The many EXCELLENT reasons to booze tomorrow night. . .". These included the Easter recess, pay day, a couple of birthdays and "like we need an excuse".

Icepick hears their thirst was such that what started as an evening in a high-end cocktail bar ended in a notorious "meat market" club around 3am. All in the name of vital parliamentary research, no doubt.
