Someone once called him the matador in Footjoys, but the bull Phil Mickelson should really be targeting is the one that rampages through his china shop from time to time. There it was again on Friday, its ugly hoofmarks all too apparent on a card of 74 which included a calamitous nine at Loch Lomond's 18th hole.

In truth, Mickelson's chances of overtaking Tiger Woods and becoming the world's No 1 golfer had taken a bit of a goring already. The Masters champion would have had to finish second or better at Loch Lomond to achieve the status that has eluded him throughout his professional career, but that prospect started to vanish as he slipped further and further away from the lead on the Barclays Scottish Open's second day.
