CERTAIN things are probably inevitable. Take walking down Glasgow's Buchanan Street in broad daylight with a Marilyn Monroe impersonator.

Some people will stare, others will coo. "I turn heads wherever I go, " she says, in dulcet-by-design tones. Monroe's lookalike is dressed in a red low-cut evening dress with diamantes, a white stole and black high heels. She blows kisses to gobsmacked, occasionally embarrassed-looking, passers by, and poses for a procession of camera phones. Wolf whistles from giggling adolescents are unavoidable, one imagines; as are the men with Carry On Laughing faces, who ogle unashamedly as they pass. But with prior warning, some of the more extreme reactions could have been avoided. One elderly man is clearly overcome by this chance encounter with a fallen idol. "Get yer tits oot, hen, " he shouts, before facing the karma of his wife's elbow.

In the kerfuffle, it would be easy to forget Johnny Depp. His doppelganger, Andrew Macdonald, follows in Marilyn's wake, unmobbed by comparison.

It's hard to imagine how the actual Johnny Depp would deal with this situation, outgunned by the glamorous blonde. Such posturing from the real Monroe drove the real Clark Gable to an early grave, and led the real Tony Curtis, while impersonating Cary Grant in Some Like It Hot, to think he was kissing Hitler.
