SCOTLAND'S chief inspector of prisons has attacked overcrowding levels in Polmont, blaming record levels of violence in the jail on its expanding population.

In what will be seen as a criticism of the Scottish Executive's failure to tackle overcrowding, Dr Andrew McLellan says the situation in the young offenders' institution drives him to despair.
