IT'S not so very long ago that a woman with aspirations to make a mark in rugby would hit the game's glass ceiling shortly after she was invited to help out with the post-match teas. So the appointment of Carol Isherwood as the first female member of the IRB's Rugby Committee two weeks ago represents the highwater mark of the tide of change sweeping through the sport for the past 25 years.

Any lingering suspicion that Isherwood's elevation might be tokenism of the worst sort is unlikely to survive long in the minds of her fellow committee members when they get down to work in the months and years ahead. A giant of the women's game, Isherwood was in at the start when the first Women's RFU was founded in December 1983, and there are few of either gender who can match her knowledge, experience and sheer dynamism as an administrator.
