IT was just before Christmas when Jamie Byng was contacted by a London literary agent and asked if he was interested in publishing a book by Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, who is credited, in Time magazine's estimation, with "the largest unauthorised release of contemporary classified information in history".

For 42-year-old Byng, who since 1994 has run the Edinburgh-based publisher Canongate, it was one of those marquee moments he will long cherish, underlining as it undoubtedly does his bijou company's transition from small fry to big fish.
