THE 2008/09 football season has got some pretty big shoes to fill. If, looking at things last summer, it was entirely predictable that Celtic would wind up as Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions and Gretna would end up relegated, no-one could have imagined the twists and turns events would take before they decided to end up like that. Those of us who blithely hazarded a guess at such outcomes at the start of the Premier League campaign obviously neglected to mention the fact that Celtic would spend great chunks of the campaign resembling incumbent champions or that Gretna would be demoted out of business entirely.

Having led the league throughout most of the campaign, only to end the season nursing grievances about the political ramifications of the fixture computer, Rangers would have to settle for other plaudits. Again, the suggestion that the Ibrox club would finish second and end up with a domestic cup double to their names was hardly an outlandish one, even if neither cup win was completed without the requisite flirting with embarrassing defeat, and both were secured largely by Kris Boyd, a player consistently deemed inadequate to feature in Walter Smith's strongest XI.
