Letters to the Sports Editor

Summary

IN 40 years' campaigning for football reform I have encountered few more dreadful ideas than "taking a break from Europe" (Devil's Advocate, July 31). Your contention that "it worked for England" could not be further from the truth. It took 10 years following Heysel for them to reach a major final and their record since 1990 has been abysmal. The score is 25 finals in 19 years before, to four finals in 15 years since.

England's problem, apart from hooliganism, was that Scotland stopped producing the players. Scotland's problem is non- competition combined with very poor organisation - yet to be properly addressed by the media. Unless we can re-build we will have a future of fourth-rate standard and a Fifa ranking of 100 plus.
