Love in a Cold Climate

Those who lived through the last killer mating season will spend the coming austral summer recuperating for the next one. This short period is the closest thing these penguins ever get to a break in that punishing cycle.

It's impossible to know whether they're looking forward to it, and their bilberry eyes don't give much away, but since they are exceptionally hydrodynamic we might guess that to these creatures, getting back in the water feels like going home.

They will soon be plunging to depths of 1500 metres for 20 minutes at a time, and eating all the krill they can see. But even their leisure activities are a matter of necessity - the fatter they make themselves, the better their chances of surviving the long walk to come.
